IMPORTANT FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TODAY'S MODERN DIET

We all are becoming more aware of the dangers of sugar and the ubiquitous nature of this deadly ingredient in our packaged foods. One is hard put to find something boxed or canned that does not contain sugar in one or more of its varied forms, even in brands that are sold in Health Food stores and even freshly prepared food in the deli department of stores.  Reading labels is crucial to your health and if you don’t routinely do it, now is the time to start.

Avoid sugar and you will lose weight, clear up skin conditions, reduce your risk of diabetes, cancer, mood swings and PMS, just to name a few of the benefits of leading a sugar free life. You will actually lose your tolerance to it and after a time also will begin to taste unpleasant to you. Other names for sugar to look for and avoid are cane juice, sucrose, fructose, corn syrup, glucose, and maltose. Some facts about sugar you want to know are:

1. Eating 3 ounces of sugar will inhibit your immune system for 5 hours

2. Sugar causes a deficiency of chromium and copper

3. Sugar interferes with calcium and magnesium absorption resulting in bone loss

4. Sugar promotes the growth of Candida fungi

While sugar harms your body, saturated fats are not the culprits we have been led to believe.  Before the 20th century when folks ate only butter and whole milk and dairy cream, and red meat was from cattle who roamed the range without antibiotics and BST injections, there was a very low incidence of coronary artery disease.  We have come full circle on the butter issue and thank goodness! Is there anyone out there who actually likes the taste of margarine?

-Healthy Fats-

An article from the Weston Price foundation states the Swedish studies confirmed that saturated fats promote breast health, while vegetable oils (such as canola, safflower, corn, cottonseed, and sunflower oils) promote breast cancer. “In Europe, the countries with the highest saturated fat consumption have the lowest rates of heart disease, and those with the lowest rates of saturated fat consumption have the highest rates of heart disease.”
As I mentioned in the previous article, when someone has a huge monetary stake in promoting a certain commodity, there will most likely be an expensive advertising promotion to insure the misinformation is slickly passed off as truth and often scare tactics are employed to devalue the competition. Such was the case of some hydrogenated products that magically replaced the real food we were eating. The Department of Agriculture has a stake in promoting the use of soybeans, corn, wheat, and sugar, paying out billions of dollars to subsidize large corporate farms. These products are from big business conglomerates and not small farms. The only caveat to this is, as in all things…moderation.  Man does not live by butter and cream and grass fed beef alone!  Enjoy your fats but eat a varied diet of as much organic food as possible and exercise and keep your stress level under control and take a moment to relax and breathe deeply.

Quote:

"Make peace with wherever you stand. And here is the most important part: When you feel despair or anything that doesn't feel good, and you reach for a thought that feels better, what comes right along with that is a conscious awareness that you do have some control of your experience."

-Abraham Hicks

Thoughts from the President

I thought an interesting parallel to changing seasons is to focus on other changes taking place in the field of nutrition. Change is essential to keeping the human body and human psyche alive and challenged. If nothing ever changed there would be no growth and we would remain unchallenged, and apathetic. Change forces us to get out of complacency. Throughout history discovery of something unfamiliar that conflicts with the status quo, has created controversy and simultaneously stimulated thought.

This very thing is cresting in the field of health and nutrition. Some of us have been listening to and putting faith in the media and absorbing information that is being deceptively disseminated by greed and the profit motive (under the guise of offering health for us). We must be discriminating and question our options for credible information in the field of health and nutrition. It is time to deconstruct the fallacies we have been fed by those that stand to reap the most monetary gain and to refute past accepted “truths” about what is really to our best interest. As a nation we are getting more chronic disease and more prescription drugs to counteract them than ever before. We also have more trustworthy resources available to us with information to help us make wise health choices. I will include links to two sites I trust at the end of the newsletter.

My goal is to bring you information on topics that will be of interest to anyone wanting to improve the quality of their lives and optimize their health through simple lifestyle and nutritional changes, some of which may contradict what big corporations and misdirected individuals would like you to believe.  I spend much of my day reading and researching the latest word on nutrition and I question everything.  This is not an exaggeration and my staff will testify to my claim of never just simply accepting something at face value.  Now, I realize this can sometimes be frustrating for others (and those others are probably laughingly shaking their heads as they read this) but it is my way of staying true to my motive of bringing better health and self empowerment to others.

To this end I offer you my monthly contribution to your good health.
